John Booth

John Booth

Meet John Booth, a British all-around artist, whose vibrant work we dearly love. When he is not doodling all over everything that crosses his path, he is also one half of the collaborative design venture Supergroup project with good friend and fellow designer Ian McIntyre. As many of you know, we love a good friendship story around here.

  • You, in a nutshell?

I am an artist and designer working across different mediums on commercial projects and my studio based practise.

  • Where is home?

I live in South London and my studio is in East London.

  • What did you wanna be when you grow up?

I wanted to make a profession from colouring in.

  • What did you become?

My childhood career goal came true.

  • A turning point?

Moving to London in 2004 to study fashion at Central Saint Martins.

  • The best gift you ever got?

A piece of jewellery by Judy Blame.

  • The best gift you ever gave?

I’ve gave a few of my head vases out over the years.

  • The ugliest item you own and dearly love?

A replica Italian marble potato from Autumn CPH. It’s not so much ugly as it is unconventional. It’s a thing of beauty.

  • Your most prized possession?

My collection of Peter Shire Eco Park Pottery mugs, including a few decorated by Peter himself.

  • If you were an object?

One of those branded ceramic cups you used to get with easter eggs. I particularly relate to the Smarties one.

  • A pastime?

Looking up clothes and things on Ebay that I most likely won’t buy.

  • An obsession?

Collecting books and magazines and panicking when I can’t find a particular niche one I’m looking for.

  • A guilty pleasure?

    This cake.

  • A vintage crush?

Kevin Webster from Coronation street when he had a moustache.

  • A coveted yet clearly unaffordable item?

Pink Landscape by Willem De Kooning, Circa 1938.

  • A bargain?

    What’s one of those :-)

  • A proud moment?

Designing for Fendi Menswear for a few seasons.

  • A side hustle?

SuperGroup: My ongoing collaboration project with Ian McIntyre.

  • A scoop?

Talking about Supergroup, Hem just released a new brown colourway of our Bronto collection.

  • A contemporary kindred spirit?

Helen Bullock, a friend of mine whom I studied with and have a shared love for drawing and patterns.

  • An all-time hero?

    Gotta be Keith Haring.
