Rayas Collective

Consuelo Campos Kahlfeldt had been to El Salvador before, but in 2022 she went back with her sister-in-law Luisa, an industrial designer with a good eye and an even better sense of what was missing from the market. What they found in the craft markets of Nahuizalco, a small town that has kept traditional weaving alive through sheer collective stubbornness, became Rayas Collective. Every basket is made by artisan Vanesa, her mother and her brother, using recycled and locally sourced HDPE cord woven around wooden moulds built by a local carpenter. Waterproof, lightweight, striped in colours Luisa designed herself, and named after the Spanish word for exactly that.
